A long time ago, there was only the Bay2Bay race and the Catalina Classic. Now you can race almost every weekend.

Stand-up paddled surfboards (SUPS)are destined to enjoy huge growth because it's easy and comfortable to jump on one for the first time and paddle around the harbor. First-timers on a paddleboard look as if they are being tortured.

Anyway, I like paddlers of all disciplines. I paddle surfski, outrigger, and still get on the paddleboard at least once a week. SUPS is cool, but just not for me.

I know what you mean about paddleboarding. The first time I saw the race was from a lifeguard tower on Torrance Beach in the early '90s. The LT on duty pointed out the boats heading toward Manhattan Pier and said they were escorting paddleboard racers who started at Isthmus. I was thunderstruck. I immediately knew that I wanted in.
