Go to prone more often for short periods. When your legs are folded up under you, venous blood return is obstructed. Go to prone and kick your legs to make sure that you are getting good venous return.

Also, because I'm top-heavy, I find that knee paddling is facilitated by pads that raise my knees about 3/8" above the level of my feet on the pad.
