Yes, when it blows in that Northerly direction, we get a TON of orographic acceleration from Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains, as the wind funnels through the Central Valley (where the name "the Valley Isle" comes from). There were gusts to 57mph on Kahoolawe on Sunday. Still nuking today ... I'm out there again this afternoon -- with a leash, of course!
